Summer Solstice is Accessible to Us All
This blog is all about the accessibility of nature to EVERYONE, no matter where you live. Sometimes, folks don’t live near or in a natural area and feel disconnected from nature. We want to give you the tools to discover and enjoy nature from anywhere you are. The great thing about Summer Solstice is that the Sun shines on us all. So, let’s chat about how to connect.
The daylight hours are seeping further into the evening by a few minutes each day as we lead up to Summer Solstice. The birds are enjoying the bird seed I set out and frolicking around the feeders in the morning and late afternoon hours. And, while I’m not a “Summer” person, I can’t deny the electric vibrancy as Summer Solstice approaches. That’s because I am connected to nature and all its magic. Infusing nature into my day is something I do everyday…with intention. Noticing and appreciating details in mindful moments.
Summer Solstice is a time of peak sunshine, abundant plant growth, and a natural turning point in the Earth's cycle. But beyond the extra daylight hours, the Summer Solstice holds a deeper significance for nature lovers and those who appreciate the subtle whispers of the natural world.
Do you want to connect with the magic of the Summer Solstice? Do you want to reconnect yourself to nature overall? Summer Solstice is a perfect time to do it. When you connect to nature, you’ll reap the therapeutic benefits (calmness, kindness, mindfulness, inner growth, etc.). Once connected, you’ll realize the importance of protecting and advocating for nature, too. It is our responsibility since we take more than we give to the Earth.
Here are 6 ways you can connect with nature from where you are:
1. Witness the Sunrise: Set your alarm to rise with the sun on the Solstice (or any day). Find a local park or enjoy from your own backyard or window. This simple act of observing the sunrise can be a powerful way to reconnect with the Earth and give you a moment to yourself and your thoughts before you start the day. It doesn’t have to be an everyday practice, but doing it at least once in a while is a great reset.
2. Nature's Apothecary: The summer solstice marks the peak of the growing season. Plants and flowers are in full bloom stride, making them ideal for harvesting for teas, for making arrangements to gift to others, or to dry for decoration. As you gather herbs or flowers, take a moment to appreciate their vibrant colors and fragrances. Thank the plants for their bounty and acknowledge the interconnectedness of all living things. This may sound silly, but there is something humbling about it. It brings a kindness into your soul and you carry that throughout the day.
3. Sun-Kissed Creations: Embrace the abundance of sunshine by harnessing its natural power in crafts. Here are some simple ways to do so:
Solar Drying: Slice fruits and vegetables and lay them out to dry in the sun's warmth. This traditional method creates delicious sun-dried snacks, preserves the seeds for planting and harvesting later, or to decorate your home with. They look beautiful as a strung garland or with dried flower bouquets hung upside down.
Sun-Infused Water: Infuse water with fresh fruits, herbs, or even crystals and let it sit in the sun for a few hours. Add ice once infused. This creates a refreshing and vibrantly flavored drink packed with a touch of sunshine magic.
4. Celebrate with Firelight: As the sun dips low on the longest day, gather around a bonfire (being mindful of fire conditions, of course!). The crackling flames symbolize the sun's power and the warmth of the season. Use this time for quiet reflection, sharing stories, or simply enjoying the company of loved ones under a star-filled sky. S’mores add a fun layer to moments like these.
5. Create a Nature Mandala or Sketch Flowers: Find a flat, open space in nature and use flowers, leaves, rocks, and other natural materials to create a circular mandala. This act of mindful creation honors the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things. Or, if you don’t have access to such items, grab and pen or pencil and some paper and sketch (whether you think you draw well or not…it’s about the moment and connection to nature). It’s easy to forget interconnectedness when we all begin our busy days. This reminds us.
6. Create a Sun Sanctuary: Dedicate a space in your home or garden to honor the sun. Arrange stones, crystals, or plants that resonate with you. This little haven can be a place for meditation, reflection, or simply soaking up the sun's energy throughout the summer.
By incorporating these simple practices into your day, you can connect with the magic of the solstice and step into summer with a renewed sense of wonder. So get outside, explore the wonders of your local environment, and embrace the magic of the longest day! Let us know in the comments below what you did to enjoy Solstice or connect with nature.
