How I Discovered the Everyday Magic of Nature
I’ve always been innately enamored with nature and have always felt protective of it. However, it wasn’t until the last 8 years or so that I really started to bond with nature. This has happened for many reasons. Firstly, I was lucky enough to find a rental on a glacial kettle pond in the town where I live and have been exposed to an abundance of nature. Secondly, losing my 56 year-old mother unexpectedly to a brain aneurysm in 2016 left me desperate to grasp onto any joy I could find. Nature has been my rock and my joy. Thirdly, I decided to go to college for the first time in 2021 as a 44-year-old, and while my major is Communications and minor is Marketing, I have filled my electives with environmental science classes. Lastly, I became an active volunteer for Mass Audubon.
In that volunteer work with Mass Audubon, I took my introverted self to Boston to meet them on Beacon Hill. I testified in front of a joint committee for pollinator protections and for the rodenticide ban. It changed my life! It opened me up to new possibilities, and I gained knowledge and skills that has empowered me to do more.
I have come to learn and to discover the magic that nature holds. I would use my lunch breaks to park somewhere I might catch a glimpse of nature to unplug from my work day. Observing birds, bugs, and animals…or simply the wind blowing through the trees…brought me smile and brought me peace. So, it became a practice that seeped into my everyday with complete intention. I seek it out.
Nature has helped me deal with grief and with other struggles life brings. Nature has become a way of life for me and I have discovered the healing, the witchiness, the power of nature, and I honor nature in my everyday life with intention.
Whether I am in an urban setting, or a rural setting, I use intention to observe the birds overhead or the behavior of the ants on the sidewalk. I love watching the chipmunks and squirrels because of their silly antics and have come to know their behavior pretty well! I have become more aware than ever that every plant, every animal, every living thing is….a life.
Because nature has changed my life…saved my life…I wanted to start a blog to encourage you all to discover the magic of nature.
